Taming of the Shrew
Essay Introductions
HW: R.J. 8.4 Read for 20-30 minutes: Get parent signature.
Class started with Jessica reading her blog, and Ms. Nakada answering questions about Coronavirus and how we can protect ourselves. We corrected Jessica's blog, and she only made a couple mistakes. Good job Jessica! Then we started taking notes on Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, A Midsummer Nights Dream, and Twelfth Night. Then, we watched a video on what Taming of the Shrew a couple times and talked about the plot. Lucentio wants to marry Bianca but can't until Katherina marries someone. Lucentio convinces Petruccio to marry Katherina and they have a contest on who is the most obedient. It is super messed up. Shakespeare is just enforcing gender stereotypes and how women are valued. He's saying that women should be valued not by their personality but by how obedient they are to their husbands and how willing they are to give up all of their independence. Its showing that women are to valued as objects not as people. These same patriarchal values of women are still in place all over the world.
Once we were done talking about how misogynistic Shakespeare was, we moved on to our test on Monday and what we are going to be graded on. Our introduction paragraphs should have our thesis, a strong lead, and reasoning to prove our thesis is correct. Ms. Nakada wrote an example paragraph to show us what ours should look like and the bell rang just as she finished going over it.
People who wanted to be in the blog were: Caleb, Mado, Natalia, Jessie, Bryanna, and Jonathan.
